memorial day part 2.

the other day i asked finn, "finn, how'd you get to be so cute?" he answered, "cuzz i comed from you, mommy."

***

i have a total enchantment with old photographs.

i'm pretty sure that it is divinely inspired enchantment as i've been led through it to connect deeply with our family's ancestry. oh boy, i am a history detective in the making.

so for memorial day we decided to visit the cemetery then have a family-photo scanning party. right up my ally.

here are a few gems i simply had to share...
 photo ettariersonclass1909nonames_zps6a95899e.jpg
the one with the arrow is Great Aunt Etta. i still don't really know who that is, but the photograph bewitched me.

this little guy is my dear-ol-dad. awe i think i might have some clues as to where finn got his cuteness.

and my grandpa joe. he was an air-force pilot.

grandpa joe again. there was a caption on the back that said "joe and punky." further scrutiny revealed a tiny dog in his hands.
 photo IdabelleandJoeRierson765McNaryAveWSalem_zpseac46857.jpg
and lastly my darling grandpa joe and his love my grandma idabelle. {we'd been with grandpa to visit her grave earlier in the day.} here they are at their first house. grandpa was a carpenter and built their home. how romantic, eh?

i can barely handle all the romance of it all.

happy sigh.

inspiring friends.

we had dinner with the coolest couple of folks you ever did meet.

they fed us real good.

amy is one of the most wonderful, inspiring women i've ever met.

even if you don't know her story you just know you want to be in her space so that some of her awesomeness might rub off on you. she's just one of those people.

jared is pretty amazing, too.

amy is also one of the most humble people i know and would probably hate to have people gushing about her. but i can't help it. i just like her so much.

oh, and she makes a mean strawberry ice-cream.

school days.

i love knowing the liam is learning so much and having such a splendid time.

it keeps me from feeling guilty for enjoying my other three children so much.

an ice cream sandwich.

Sometimes we like to squeeze a little date-night into our family time. Like if we're all watching a movie together, Matt and I snuggle and share a bowl of popcorn, just our bowl. Or if we're all at the park and the kids are happily playing, Matt and I will play together like we would if it were just the two of us.

We spent like 10 hilarious minutes trying to pull ourselves up onto this bar...

Neither of us could do it. It was so stinkin funny.

When we start laughing too hard the kids want in on the fun. Same goes for the couch snuggling. Parenting with Matt is like this awesome sweet treat inside of another sweet treat. Oh, I love him.

two stories about our son as a cat.

Once upon a time there was boy who had a cat.

This cat had eaten a worm that had been concealing a fish hook. The hook lodged in his cheek. The cat became highly defensive and was obviously in pain.

The boy's father knew that the cat needed help. The boy and a friend held the cat as the father pulled the hook from its mouth. The cat fought tooth and nail and ran far away, very upset, the moment the hook was out.

A few days later the cat came back and could never again be parted from its savior, the boy's father.

Even a cat can understand that kind of love.

My dad was the boy in that story and I am so thankful that he shared his experience with me.

Once upon a time I asked Ossi to diagnose this stuffed cat at the play-pet-hospital. Ossi looked him over and told me there was nothing to be done. He said that a long time ago the cat had been bitten by a poisonous snake and that he would die.

I asked him if there was any medicine for the cat. He asked me, "wouldn't it be easier to just get a new cat?"

I told him I would never give up on my cat until I found a way to help him. Ossi looked up at me and smiled a big, happy smile. It was a good moment.

life of riley.
